Delaware CDL

There are several requirements to getting a Delaware commercial drivers license or CDL.  You should possess the proper requirements if you are to acquire the license and you also have to comply with both state and federal regulations as well.  It is important to note that once you apply for a license in Delaware, you will have to surrender your current license and also undergo several tests and possess the physical fitness in order to do the job.  You will also have to pay for certain fees that are included in the getting of a CDL.

In order to acquire a truck driving license, the applicant should be at least 18 or 21 years old upon the time of application.  This is in compliance with federal rules that require  drivers to be at least 18 years of age for intrastate driving and 21 for those that do interstate. Aside from this, you should also have at least a good grasp of the English language for reading of road signs as well as of communicating to authorities, your employer, and to the public in general. You also have to make sure that you are physically fit for the job by undergoing a DOT medical certification and vision exams.

The state does not require applicants to undergo a particular type of training before applying for a CDL.  What is needed however, is someone who is licensed and is capable of teaching you how to drive the type of commercial vehicle that you will be driving.  Sufficient experience in driving is needed before taking the Delaware commercial drivers skills test and you also need to pass a written exam before you can be eligible to get a CDL Learner’s Permit. This permit will let you practice driving a commercial driver together with a licensed mentor or teacher.

To prepare for the written exam, you will have to read the Delaware CDL Manual which is available in any local DMV office.  You can also download it through the state’s website.  The manual includes the skills and areas which are important to commercial driving and it also teaches you some of the aspects where you will be tested.  It includes pre-trip inspection, basic driving skills, and driving on the road.  You need to make sure that you have sufficient experience in these aspects and that you have read the manual thoroughly in order to pass the road test.

A Delaware commercial drivers license also includes several classes and endorsements such as for Passenger, Tank, Hazardous Materials, School Bus, and the Class A, B, and C licenses.  Make sure that you have complied with the physical and medical exams before applying.  You can ask for these medical forms and other forms from the medical practitioner themselves or at the DMV office.  The CDL permit lasts for 6 months only so make sure to get all the training that you need during that time frame.  The written tests can be taken any time but you will have to ask for an appointment or schedule for the road test.
