Truck Driving Schools in Kentucky
A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is a requirement to drive commercial vehicles such as buses or trucks in the U.S. Licenses are usually classified as Class A, B, and C; each class allows a person to drive a specific kind of vehicle. However, CDL classifications in Kentucky are as follows:
• I – Interstate driving only
• K – vehicles not equipped/air brakes
• S – School bus, mass transit, or non-profit
• L – Except Class A bus
• J – Except Class A and B bus
• O – Vehicles other than tractor trailers
The first step in obtaining a CDL in Kentucky is to complete the Commercial Driver Licensing Application. It is important to remember that you must be at least 18 years old to drive in this state. You will also be required to complete a CDL application 10 year history survey. In this application, you will need to list all the states you have had a license within the last 10 years.
The next step is to complete a knowledge test consisting of 50 questions. These questions will cover vehicle inspection, cargo handling, operating under various conditions and an additional 20 questions about combination vehicles for a class A permit. If you pass this test, you will be given a CDL permit which will allow you to practice under supervised guidance. After passing the written exams, you may now take the road skills test. This test consists of three parts including a pre-trip inspection, off-road maneuvering, and on-road driving assessment. You will receive your CDL after you pass this test.
